How an apostille works in New York

An apostille is a certificate that lets a public document be recognized in another country that belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention. It's often needed for documents used abroad, like a power of attorney for property back home, school records or business papers.

For a document notarized in New York, the process usually has three steps: the document is notarized, the county clerk where the notary is qualified certifies the notary's signature, and the New York Department of State then issues the apostille.

Federal documents, such as an FBI background check, go through the U.S. Department of State instead. Countries outside the convention use a different process called legalization, usually through their consulate.
